Nerea Sánchez García presents research on systemic diseases and onychomycosis at the 55th National Podiatry Congress in Zaragoza
Our colleague Nerea Sánchez García, a member of the SALBIS Research Group at the University of León and a lecturer on the Podiatry degree programme at the Ponferrada Campus, participated in the 55th National Podiatry Congress, held in Zaragoza on 23–24 October 2026.
During the event, she presented the poster “Impact of systemic diseases on the development and severity of onychomycosis in patients from the province of León”, a study exploring the relationship between systemic diseases, the clinical characteristics of this nail infection and the microorganisms involved.
The research was conducted as a cross-sectional observational study involving 36 adult patients, using fungal culture and PCR techniques for diagnosis. Within this sample, associations were observed between age and the type of fungus identified, as well as between pain and factors such as sex and the presence of systemic diseases.
The study highlights the importance of examining onychomycosis in the context of patients’ overall health. Its findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between comorbidities and the clinical presentation of this infection.
Participation in the congress provided an opportunity to share the findings with podiatry professionals and raise the profile of research carried out at the University of León.
