Néstor Serrano Fuentes

I am a Lecturer (Profesor Ayudante Doctor) at the University of León, within the Department of Nursing, and I carry out my teaching and research activities at the Ponferrada Campus. I am a member of the SALBIS Research Group at the University of León and collaborate with the Long Term Conditions Research Group at the University of Southampton.

Prior to joining the University of León, I lived in the United Kingdom for almost twelve years, where I developed my clinical and research career. I worked as a cardiac nurse at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and subsequently in a cardiothoracic high dependency unit and in the Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital Southampton. Alongside my clinical practice, I completed a PhD in Health Sciences at the University of Southampton, combining the final stages of my doctoral thesis with a role as a senior research assistant. My doctoral research focused on the influence of multilevel environments on the adoption of health practices among adults with obesity in the United Kingdom.

Following the completion of my PhD, I undertook a postdoctoral research position at the University of Southampton, funded by NIHR ARC Wessex, where I led a project examining narratives of social responsibility surrounding the consumption of ultra-processed foods and unhealthy diets.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from the University of Oviedo, a Master’s degree in Research in Social and Health Sciences from the University of León, and a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Southampton, complemented by advanced doctoral training at the European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS).

My research interests focus on the prevention of chronic diseases, particularly adult obesity, the social determinants of health, the philosophy of health, and the history of nursing and public health, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Methodologically, my work is grounded in reflexive and critical approaches, aimed at understanding how people experience and make sense of health problems in their everyday lives, using primarily qualitative research methods and social network analysis.
